The MIT Enterprise Forum of the UK is delighted to welcome Kenneth P. Morse, Senior Lecturer and Managing Director, MIT Entrepreneurship Center, as our next speaker in the forum's Distinguished Entrepreneur series.
Ken Morse will speak on the subject of 'Managing Change: The power of Entrepreneurship in the Economic Tsunami.' Today's powerful, global economic forces can be scary and devastating to many of us. Throughout history, however, entrepreneurs have seen opportunities where others see desolation. The phoenix rises from the ashes; Ken will talk about what it takes for entrepreneurs to grab a surfboard and ride the tsunami waves, rather than being rolled over by them.
Ken has been a high performance leader in global high tech sales and sales management for 25 years. Prior to joining the MIT Entrepreneurship Center in 1996, Ken was a co-founder of six high tech companies, together with MIT friends and classmates. Five of these ventures had successful IPOs or mergers; one was a disaster. They included 3Com Corporation, Aspen Technology, Inc., a China Trade Company, a biotech venture and an expert systems company. Ken was either the CEO or responsible for part or all of the Sales organization in each of these new enterprises. During his 4+ years as Managing Director of AspenTech (AZPN) for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), grew the EMEA organization from 22 to 200+ employees - with a large office in Cambridge, UK - zero staff turnover, and expanded sales revenue six to ten times from essentially all key client relationships.
Since Ken joined the MIT Entrepreneurship Center in 1996, the number of students taking Entrepreneurship Courses has increased from 220 to 1,600 per year while the number of professors and lecturers has grown from two to over thirty.
From the very beginning, and throughout the six years, Ken played active roles in the Cambridge-MIT Institute (CMI), especially with regard to entrepreneurship and the Scientific Enterprise Centers (SECs) throughout the UK, Scotland and Northern Ireland, visiting more than 40-50 times. He has taught a global sales strategies workshop for start-up, high growth CEOs more than 30 times in several cities in Europe and the Middle East.
Ken is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Cercle Royal Gaulois Artistique Littéraire (Brussels), and the Quissett Yacht Club He speaks fluent French and some Chinese. Ken was recently elected to hold a Chair in Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Competitiveness, in the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management, at Delft University of Technology. From 2001 to 2006, he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Ulster.
When he is not helping young companies to succeed, Ken enjoys sailing his wooden boat with his family around Cape Cod.
