Dr. de Grey's research focuses on whether regenerative medicine can thwart the ageing process. He works on the development of what he calls "Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence" (SENS), a tissue-repair strategy intended to rejuvenate the human body and allow an indefinite lifespan. In July 2005, the MIT Technology Review challenged scientists to disprove de Grey's claims, offering a $20,000 prize to any molecular biologist who could demonstrate that "SENS is so wrong that it is unworthy of learned debate." The challenge remains open. Aubrey was the co-founder of the Methuselah Mouse Prize, a contest designed to accelerate research into effective life extension interventions by awarding prizes to researchers who extend the lifespan of mice to unprecedented lengths. Aubrey serves as editor-in-chief of Rejuvenation Research. Dr. de Grey holds a bachelors degree in Computer Science and a PhD, both from Cambridge University. Until 2006 he was in charge of software development at the university's Genetics Department for the FlyBase genetic database. In 1999, his book The Mitochondrial Free Radical Theory of Aging was published. Then in 2007, de Grey wrote, with Michael Rae, the book Ending Aging that provides a detailed account of the science, politics and social challenges of the entire SENS agenda.
